Infographic: Pancake Ingredients Around the World

There was a brief period of time when every one of my meals consisted of a giant stack of pancakes slathered in syrup and my own tears. Why? Because I’m poor and the only food I had in my apartment was pancake mix after an overzealous at-home brunch with my roommates. I welcome your judgement.

Had I known about the several small but noticeable variations in pancake ingredients around the world that are outlined in this graph, however, my sad breakfast-for-dinners could have been an experiment in global food culture – a taste test of worldly morning meals, if you will. Instead, I fat shamed myself while faceplanting into a heaping lump of poorly made flapjacks and then went to bed.

Some takeaways from the infographic:

  • If you put salt in a Kiwi’s pancake, they will probably go all Down Under on your ass.
  • Brits use butter sparingly, which is funny because they use clotted cream liberally on other breakfast foodstuffs.
  • Australians are picky about the type of flour they use, and Canadians don’t even put real butter in their pancakes (buttermilk is gross, y’all).
  • Also: Canadians are fuckin’ weird and are all borderline obese, apparently.

How do you make your pancakes? Are you more of an Irish traditionalist or a Canadian fat ass? Let us know in the comments!
