Welcome to a new year! We hope your celebrations were filled with rivers of champagne and mountains of delicious finger foods.

If you haven’t noticed, there’s something about the start of the new year that makes people very interested in numbers and statistics. Look on just about any website today and you’ll see data-heavy “year in review” posts or infographics on some aspect of the previous 365 days. Never wanting to break from the crowd (we were slaves to peer pressure in high school), we decided to follow suit.

However, this by-the-numbers guide to foodie travel from Hotels4U.com doesn’t restrict itself to facts from just 2012. Instead, this is a comprehensive guide to global food and beverage consumption showing you how and what the world eats, how much it costs, and weirdly, how much it weighs en masse.

Our favorite takeaway: we had absolutely no idea that chicken tikka masala was invented in Glasgow, so we’ll have to change up our go-to order the next time we’re trying to have an “authentic” Indian meal.
