An epic food fight is a fairly common day dream for people. Food flying in slow motion. People laughing as spaghetti hits the ceiling fan. However, when the food fight is caused by intense turbulence on an international flight and not a group of rowdy seventh graders, that daydream can quickly turn into a nightmare.
This “nightmare” became reality for the passengers aboard a Singapore Airlines flight from Singapore to London on Sunday. The plane hit a pocket of clear-air turbulence that caused it to lose almost one hundred feet of altitude. The result? Everything that wasn’t held down flew to the ceiling during the breakfast service. And you know how the captain always warns you to wear your seat belt if the sign is lit? They mean it. A few unbuckled passengers learned the lesson the hard way when they joined the ceiling buffet.
Luckily no one was severely injured. As soon as the turbulence died down the flight attendants quickly cleaned up the mess and treated any injuries that had been obtained during the chaos. Eleven passengers and one flight attendant had minor injuries so the only casualties were the trays and trays of airplane food. Although it is airplane food, so how great of a loss it was is still up in the air.
Alan Cross, a passenger aboard the flight, snapped a few pictures during the incident and thank goodness he broke the “no cellphone during flight” rule because the pictures are awesome. Everything went as planned for the remaining ten hours of the flight (although who really wanted to stay on that plane after that?) and passengers were met at Heathrow by medics. All passengers were also given a complimentary box of chocolates.
Because nothing says “sorry about your breakfast flying to ceiling” like free chocolate.
